Roma occupies the bluffs above the Rio Grande in western Starr County, and it holds one of the oldest and most architecturally distinctive building stocks in the region. The historic district contains nineteenth-century masonry buildings that have very little in common with the tract housing that makes up most Valley roofing work, and they should not be approached the same way.
On older masonry property the roof and the wall are a single system. Parapet walls, coping, and the flashing where roof meets masonry are where the water actually gets in, and none of that is solved by putting new shingles on the field of the roof. A contractor who quotes an older Roma building the way they would quote a 2005 subdivision house has not understood the building. We would rather spend the time on the flashing and coping detail and leave sound roofing alone.
Away from the historic core, Roma has ordinary residential streets and rural property spreading out into Starr County ranch land, and there the work is more familiar: sun-aged shingles, failed pipe boots, wind damage on exposed ground, and metal panel on barns and outbuildings.

Very often, no. On older masonry buildings the water almost always enters at the parapet wall, the coping on top of it, or the flashing where the roof meets the masonry. The field of the roof can be entirely sound while all of that fails. We will inspect those details specifically and photograph them, and if the answer is that you need coping and flashing work rather than a re-roof, that is what the report will say.
No. The inspection is free and there is no travel surcharge on the estimate. Roma is at the western edge of our service area so we do tend to batch work out here, which can mean a start date a few days further out than it would be in McAllen — but the pricing is the same.
Not shingle. Shingle systems rely on gravity and overlap and they will fail on a low pitch. Flat and low-slope areas need a membrane system — TPO or modified bitumen — with fully sealed seams and drainage that actually moves water off the roof. Correcting the drainage is usually as important as the membrane itself.
