Can you just put new shingles over my old ones?
It is legal in many cases, and some contractors will offer it because it is cheaper and faster. We do not recommend it. Roofing over hides the decking, so nobody sees the rot underneath, and it traps heat between layers which shortens the life of the new shingles. It also complicates future insurance claims. We tear off.
Will impact-resistant shingles lower my insurance?
Often, yes. Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for Class 4 impact-rated roofing materials because they hold up better to hail.
